And The Barber Kept On Shaving..
The allure of the barbershop experience is steeped in a beautiful mythology; a man’s devotion to his barber often eclipses even his deepest commitments. This bond, once established, endures through the years, surpassing many friendships and even the strongest of partnerships. The assurance offered by a barber, capable of enhancing a man’s appearance and confidence, is invaluable. Jimmy shared with us: “I have patrons who travel great distances, having visited my chair for over two decades. They journey here for each haircut, every five weeks, some driving for an hour.” We’ve also heard tales, like that of an octogenarian who has never let another barber touch his hair.
Each barbershop occupies a legendary status in someone’s heart. Today’s barbershops vary from the mundane to the bizarre. My path recently crossed a medieval-themed barbershop in New York, decked out with full iron armor and swords (for decoration, not haircuts). In a suburb of Toronto, tales circulate about a one-eyed barber known for his precarious scissor-wielding but astonishingly quick cuts. Montreal boasts vibrant African barbershops, doubling as emporiums for CDs, phone cards, t-shirts, religious symbols, and electronics. In London, I became a regular at a Covent Garden barbershop, manned by twin barbers, during a summer. Then there’s the compact barbershop in Myers Flat, California, a solitary blue structure amidst a field. And let’s not overlook the simplistic roadside barbershops of East Asia, offering nothing more than a chair, a mirror shard, a canvas roof, and a pair of scissors. Unfortunately, these havens of tradition and camaraderie are diminishing in a world where authenticity is often repurposed and commercialized, unnoticed by many. Salon Pierre and Salon Bob are just two victims of this trend, succumbing to rising rents and dwindling business, with one transforming into a private residence and the other into an art gallery.
When I first explored these establishments, we saw them as charming and nostalgic, yet we underestimated the profoundness they encompassed. As these establishments vanish from our cities, the remaining few stand as portals to the past, preserving elements of masculinity in their vintage chairs, wall adornments, and modest refreshment offerings. The genuine atmosphere, often absent in commercial chains, is what draws clients to these traditional barbershops. It’s this revered connection, crucial for the perfect haircut and style, that maintains the barbershop’s role as a pivotal community space, rich with both public and personal histories.
